Anybody can submit an entry as long as they or the company/individual they are entering meet the criteria for the relevant category. The period covered by Student Accommodation Awards is from 1 September 2015. While initiatives, deals or projects may have commenced before that time, the focus of the entry must be within the stated period. 

 

University Halls of Residence

The UK has a long tradition of university halls of residence, a fertile ground from which strong student movements and societies have sprung. Most of these, however, were built for another, pre-internet era, utilitarian in design and built, with little or no communal space. Over the past decade, many universities have undergone a massive transformation, creating a new generation of student housing that combine the best of both past and present. New generation halls of residence connect students in meaningful ways and are intricately linked to their well-being; they also provide cutting edge learning and social spaces, offer best in digital technologies and excellent value for money overall.

The entry is open to all exceptional university halls of residence that can show evidence of:

  • a modern student environment, encompassing best-in-class learning, design and communal facilities
  • innovation, vision and boldness that set them apart from the crowd
  • outstanding student experiences through a range of activities and facilities
  • fostering social inclusion via affordable options
  • excellent value for money and receive a consistently high satisfaction ratings.

Private Halls of Residence

With universities restricted in terms of own capital and funding to meet demand for student accommodation, the private sector has stepped in, creating a variety of housing options. The best of them follow in the tradition of university halls of residence in terms of learning and social cohesion, but with the 21st century focus on cutting edge learning, new technologies, and student-centric social aspects.

The entry is open to all exceptional private halls of residence that:

  • provide a modern student environment, encompassing best-in-class learning, design and communal facilities
  • harness innovation, vision and boldness that set them apart from the crowd
  • create outstanding student experiences through a range of activities and facilities
  • offer excellent value for money and receive a consistently high satisfaction rating.

Personality of the Year

The award will go to an outstanding individual who has made an impressive mark on the sector over the past twelve months. The entry is open to all exceptional individuals working in the student housing arena: student accommodation teams from universities and private providers, developers and financiers, and advisers and agents whose advice has proven invaluable.

Do you have an exceptional colleague who has excelled in one or more of the criteria listed below? If so, tell us in 750 words why they deserve to win the award.

Examples of why an individual may be awarded personality of the year include:

  • the introduction of a fresh and innovative housing initiative that has improved student well-being, access to learning or social cohesion
  • the creation of a well thought out and successful solution to a specific student housing issue
  • a product or service that has been designed or improved that has received excellent student feedback
  • the demonstration of leadership, fairness and flair in dealings with colleagues, commercial partners and students alike.

Student Experience of the Year

How student experience their living arrangements will directly impact on all aspects of their life - from academic and educational, to social integration and general well-being. The entry is open to schemes that have tangibly enhanced student life, and could cover anything from creative space solutions, collaborative work spaces, novel recreational facilities to innovative digital technologies.

The award will go to the scheme chosen by students as the most beneficial to their overall experience, and which has achieved at least one of the following:

  • improved student experience in at least one of the following areas:academic, learning, well-being or social
  • is innovative, original and aligned with student lifestyle and needs
  • has received a consistently excellent feedback from students
  • created in collaboration with students and for students

Developer of the Year

Exceptional student accommodation developers demonstrate that quality can be achieved within budgetary and time constraints, while not compromising on creating optimal living environments. Through cutting-edge design, communal and social facilities and a strong focus on technology, the best developers place students at the heart of their strategy. They combine optimal locations, the latest in built and facilities design, while ensuring a strong financial performance.

The category is open to all outstanding developers of student accommodation who have:

  • completed a student accommodation project within the past twelve months
  • delivered a flagship scheme that significantly contributes to a local student community
  • implemented the latest techniques or approaches in design, sustainability and/or social infrastructure
  • created original and covetable places in which to live and study
  • shown a strong financial performance and excellent sales

Professional Team of the Year

From planning support and development, funding and investment, to operational and management matters, expert advice and consultancy are key to navigating the complex student accommodation terrain. In many ways the success of a student accommodation scheme will depend on robust financial management and strategic planning of facilities to align them to local universities and meet students’ needs.

The category is open to any professional advisory team - financial, agency, legal – that has provided an exceptional counsel to a student accommodation scheme over the past twelve months and has achieved at least one of the following:

  • identified innovative funding and investment opportunities through JVs, partnerships and financial modelling
  • managed estate strategy, asset management and procurement services
  • structured leases, nomination agreements and contracts
  • created strategies to lower carbon footprint, drive sustainability and energy efficiency

Operator of the Year

Modern student accommodation is light years away from the utilitarian stock of the past; today’s best operators are in tune with both cultural and technological shifts, as well as the latest build and design standards. From providing collaborative study spaces and recreational facilities to embracing the latest in digital and networked, outstanding operators offer students much more than bricks and mortar. They offer a variety of choice and exceptional value in strategic locations close to universities and learning institutions.

The category is open to any operator of student accommodation that:

  • is accredited by ANUK
  • creates student-centric environments with outstanding learning, social and recreational facilities
  • offers excellent customer services, on-site assistance and support
  • has implemented the latest in digital and IT infrastructure
  • provides a range of rental options and rates, and exceptional value for money

Investor of the Year

A forward-thinking investor will seek modern and experiential student accommodation projects in strategic locations that manage risk intelligently and offer tangible investment returns. The award will recognise any type of investor – an investment or institutional fund, private equity firm, and other provider of finance - that has done the most to help the student accommodation sector develop, innovate and be seen as a strong investment class.

The entry is open to an exceptional investor who:

  • has invested in a new development or redevelopment project over the past twelve months
  • has made investments in a student housing scheme committed to providing the latest in facilities, design and/or technology
  • has a deep understanding of the student accommodation market
  • has shown financial innovation in student accommodation deals in 2016
  • has a long-term commitment to investing in best-in-class student accommodation projects
